From Atomic Mass to Def Leppard

Not many people know that Def Leppard was not originally Def Leppard. It actually started out as Atomic Mass, then it was changed to Deaf Leopard. From there, it was changed to what we know it as today, Def Leppard. The changes in the name of the band can represent the growth of the band itself, which has come a long way.

Atomic Mass, was formed in Sheffield, Yorkshire by Pete Willis, Rick Savage, and Tony Kenning. Most novice bands will rehearse in a garage or a basement, but Atomic Mass was different, they rehearsed in an abandoned spoon factory. Later on, Joe Elliot came to try out for the band, got it in, and suggested the name Deaf Leopard. The group then changed its name to Def Leppard to make it sound less like a pop band. They started out by playing at schools and were eventually picked up by Phonogram and Mercury.

From this point, they were producing albums like hot cakes. Then tragedy struck the group when Rick Allen, the group's drummer, had his left arm severed in a car accident. Most people would have given up drumming, but Allen was strong and was able to continue drumming with a Simmons electric drum kit.

Over the years, their albums have been able to capture two Diamond Awards, which is given to artists that sell over 10 million records in the United States. Only 45 other artists have been given this title and Def Leppard is one of them.

The MGM in Las Vegas will be hosting Def Leppard in September. The night would include a combination of Vegas, hearing Def Leppard in person, and seeing a one armed drummer be one of the best drummers on Earth. You can't argue with those odds.
