The Trans-Siberian Orchestra is a progressive rock band based in New York City.  This group was founded in 1993 by producer, composer, and lyricist Paul O'Neill.  They united a 60-piece orchestra plus chorus with the talents of O'Neill, a veteran hard rock producer.

The band's musical style incorporates classical, orchestral, symphonic, and progressive elements into hard rock and heavy metal.  They are most famous for their series of Christmas-themed rock operas for which they do an annual fall-winter tour.  Their other releases are rock operas on historical themes.  The Trans-Siberian Orchestra is also known for their extensively charity work and elaborate concerts, which are complete with a full orchestra, a massive light show, lasers, dozens of pyrotechnics, moving trusses, video screens, and other effects that are synchronized to the music.

The group released its debut album, Christmas Eve and Other Stories, just in time for the 1996 holiday season and since has gone on to sell nearly 8 million concert tickets and 8.5 million albums.  In 2009, Billboard Magazine ranked the Trans-Siberian Orchestra as one of the Top 25 Touring Artists of the past decade.
