Strong Sade
Most singers and musicians come from the United States or Europe. Sade was different, she was born in an isolated village in Nigeria to a African father and English mother in 1959. Her mother returned to England and took Sade with her. This is where she broke out of isolation and made her way into the spotlight.
In her teens, she developed a great singing voice and would try to get part time jobs related to the music business. She loved to listen to Ray Charles and Al Green. Music was not the only thing she was interested in, she was also doing some modeling and was studying fashion at the St. Martin's School of Art in London.
Her first group was Arriva, which performed Latin funk. This is where she helped write "Smooth Operator," her first hit. Later, she joined a funk band called Pride, which would attract a lot of attention. Record companies showed interest, but not in the band as a whole, just Sade.
Diamond Life was her first album and was top ten in the UK. After two more albums, she won a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1986. Her first tour was in 2001 and sold out everywhere across the United States. The tour was such a success, she released her Lovers Live live album and DVD in 2002.
In the city that defines entertainment, John Legend, a music super star, will open for Sade in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in September.
