The Black Crowes are a rock band that was formed in 1984 in Marietta, Georgia. The original members consisted of Chris Robinson, Rich Robinson, Jeff Cease, Johnny Colt and Steve Gorman. The band’s music is a mix of psychedelic pop and southern rock, but eventually became described as 1970’s era blues rock. They signed with Def American Recordings and released their debut album “Shake Your Money Maker” in 1999.
Over the course of the years the band released eight studio albums, four live albums and multiple singles that charted on Billboard. During the height of their fame The Black Crowes opened up for bands such as Metallica and Motley Crüe before launching their own tour in 1991. After the release of their 1996 album “Three Snakes and One Charm” their guitarist and bassist left the group forcing the band to replace the missing members, resulting in even more chart toppers.
After Sven Pipien and Audley Freed joined the band they released one more album before taking a three year hiatus. Once the band returned, they released their 2008 album titled “War Paint,” having a slightly different sound, but still landing in the top five albums of Billboard 200.
The band’s latest 2010 album “Croweology,” was followed by a nearly sold out world tour. In January 2015, Rich Robinson announced the final break up which allowed the band members to move onto other musical projects. However, Chris and Rich Robinson will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album with a North American tour in 2020.
