The Black Keys are the pair of blues rockers from Akron, Ohio who have become ambassadors of its music for a new generation. They, singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney, will also be closing the year in Las Vegas with back to back performances, the second of which will be on New Year’s Eve. This is quite a gig and one the band that has dominated the indie scene for over a decade but has just become aware on a massive mainstream scale in the last couple of years.
That breakthrough came with the single “Tighten Up” and the album Brothers. Benefiting from producer Danger Mouse’s expertise, the Black Keys would win the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or a Group with Vocal for the single and the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. While much of the television award audience came away confused, the win proved a major win for the band and the indie rock genre. Like alternative rock before it, indie had come into mainstream acceptance.
Many millions of fans had been a fan of the group since first coming upon The Big Come Up, the debut album from a decade ago (including this one), and most of them were glad to have one of their favorite bands recognized for general awesomeness. The duo comprising the band would concur. They have never been allergic to success and have certainly enjoyed the suddenly certifiable success.
“Tighten Up” and Howlin’ for You” became the first pair of Top 10 songs. El Camino, the follow up album to the Grammy winner would endear the Black Keys to an international audience as never before. Suddenly, Auerbach an Carney had fans in the United States and Canada in North America, the UK in Europe, and Australia and New Zealand Oceania. “Lonely Boy” has done well too, topping charts and going triple-platinum in Australia and gold in the United States.
Still, despite all the successes in sales and on the charts, the Black Keys continue to dominate with a stripped down garage rock sound on the live stage. This is where blues rock sounds the best and the Vegas Black Keys tickets will give the Strip a chance to confirm this very soon.
