American Idol winner, Taylor Hicks, was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1976.  He auditioned in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 10, 2005, and was named the winner on May 24, 2006.  He was 29 years old at the time, and became the oldest contestant to win American Idol. 

Hicks won the hearts of Americans with his unique dance moves, positive attitude, and amazing harmonica playing, as well as his talented singing voice.  Simon Cowell, a judge in the contest, had to retract his prediction that Taylor Hicks wouldn’t make it to the final round.  With over 63.4 million votes cast, Hicks became the fifth “American Idol”.

Taylor Hicks set himself apart with his raw singing talent, wild dancing, and prematurely gray hair.  His hair started going gray when he was just 14 years old.  His fans became known as the “Soul Patrol”.  When he was younger, he turned to “soul” and “blues”  music for peace and solace.  So naturally, his style of singing is very soulful.

He released two independent albums.  In 1997, his album was titled, “In Your Time.”  In 2005, he released an album called, “Under the Radar.”  In 2007, he wrote an autobiography titled, “Heart full of Soul: An Inspirational Memoir about Finding your Voice and Finding Your Way.”  In 2008, he started releasing albums on his own label, Modern Whomp Records.

Hicks made his Broadway debut in 2008, as Teen Angel in “Grease.”  The show went on a national tour, and Hicks reprised his roll. 

Hicks has come full circle, returning to the place where he first auditioned for American Idol: the Paris Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
