Placido Domingo is an amazing singer, conductor, and administrator whose names literally translates to mean “Placid Sunday’. His motto is “If I rest, I rust” and he has admitted that the more he studies, travels and performs the more fulfilled he is in life and the more his love of music grew.
At home on some of the world’s biggest stages for more than half a century now Domingo has sung 3,687 performances of 144 roles by the end of 2013, in addition to having conducted 526 performances and boasts of numerous recordings at the age of 72 he forges ahead with total commitment. From his first commitment at only 18 years old he auditioned as a baritone for the Mexican National Opera and was given a spot to sing small tenor parts and this took him to two year later earning his first leading role in Monterrey: Alfredo in La Traviata.
While he says there is not one favorite opera role or opera house he does seem to frequent the Metropolitan Opera in New York more frequently than any other. His major new roles recently have included Siegmund in Wagner’s Die Walkure and the title part in the same composer’s Parsifal, as well as Gherman in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades. As General Director of the Los Angeles Opera he presents not only classics by Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and others but Domingo keeps it fresh by including operas by contemporary American composers.
