At an early age, Melissa Viviane Jefferson struggled with body image and self-love. However, Jefferson, otherwise known as Lizzo, turned her struggle into a story, and has since shared it with the world. After forming a musical group with her friends called the Cornrow Clique, studying classical musical in college, and performing with indie groups in different clubs across Minneapolis, Lizzo made it clear she wanted to be a musician. She debuted her first solo album, Lizzobangers, in 2013, which critics continuously praised. In 2016, she released an E.P called Coconut Oil, which featured her hit single “Good as Hell.” She co-wrote songs for movie soundtracks, starred as a guest judge on Rupaul’s Drag Race, and toured with artists like Haim and Florence & the Machine. Her breakthrough, however, came from her song “Truth Hurts.” Although the song was released in 2017, it gained popularity in 2019 after becoming a meme on TikTok and being featured in the 2019 film Someone Great. The song later became her first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and eventually stayed on the Top 200 for months. She eventually added the song in the deluxe version of her third album, Cuz I Love You, which peaked at #6 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. Since her breakthrough, Lizzo has been touring and headlining festivals across the globe and has been nominated for many awards, including some Grammys. She continues to embrace diversity in music and promote body positivity and self-love in everything she does.
