Leon Russell was born on Apr. 2, 1942 in Lawton, Oklahoma as Claude Russell Bridges and is a popular American songwriter, singer, and musician. He's enjoyed a fine career over the years as a session musician and as a solo artist. He fell in love with music at an early age and was already playing the piano by the time he was four years old, and was performing in Tulsa nightclubs while attending high school.

He moved to Los Angeles to become a session musician after leaving school and worked mainly as a pianist in the 1960s. By the end of the decade he had also started doing some arranging and had started writing songs. He continued to work as a studio musician and in the 1970s earned recognition as a solo performer.

While working in a studio band for Phil Spector, the artist played on songs by a variety of artists such as George Harrison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Doris Day, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Elton John, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Badfinger, Willie Nelson, The Band, Frank Sinatra, Glen Campbell, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan. His initial success in songwriting came in 1969 when his song "Delta Lady" was covered by Joe Cocker.

Two years later George Harrison of the Beatles asked Russell to play piano on an album named "Straight Up" by British band Badfinger. He also played with Harrison and many other stars in 1971 at the Concert For Bangladesh in New York City. In 1972 he toured America and a live album called "Leon Live" was released.

His song titled "This Masquerade", which was performed by George Benson, reached number 10 on the Billboard charts in 1976. Three years later he hit number one on the Billboard country charts with "Heartbreak Hotel", which was recorded with Willie Nelson.

In 2010, he wrote and recorded with Elton John and a double album named "The Union" was a product of the recording sessions. Leon Russell became a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2011 when he was inducted in New York.
