Kris Kristofferson is a well-known American actor, writer, and musician who has released several hit songs throughout his career such as "Help Me Make It Through the Night, " and 'Me and Bobby McGee." He was born in Brownsville, Texas on June 22, 1936 as Kristoffer Krisitan Kristofferson His paternal grandfather was Swedish.

The star was an accomplished college athlete and graduated from Pomona College with a BA in 1958. He then attended the University of Oxford, where he engaged in boxing and started writing songs, graduating in 1960. He originally used the name Kris Carson when recording for Top Rank Records.

After graduating from Oxford he enlisted in the U. S. Army where he became ranked as a captain and learned how to fly helicopters. In the 1960s he resumed his career in music while stationed in West Germany and then formed a group when he left the army in 1965. He was offered a professor's position at West Point, but decided music was more interesting.

He settled in Nashville, where he tried to make it in the music business. In 1966 some of his songs were recorded and he signed a deal with Epic Records a year later. His first release was a single called "Golden Idol." However, it didn't have an impact in the charts.

He achieved success as a solo artist after signing to Monument Records in 1970 and released a self-titled album. However, it wasn't until it was re-released as "Me and Bobby McGee" that sales began to soar. Other artists continued to cover his songs and several of them won Academy of Country Music awards. He also won a Grammy in 1971 for "Help Me Make It Through the Night."

At this time Kris Kristofferson started acting and made several popular films over the years, such as "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, " "Vigilante Force, " and "A Star Is Born." He has been inducted into several songwriters halls of fame as well as the Country Music Hall of Fame.
