Rumors were confirmed earlier today as the official word came down that the May 5th fight scheduled for T-Mobile Arena between Canelo Alvarez and Triple G has been called off. The venue and MGM started issuing refunds last week on the heels of yet a second positive test for a performance enhancing drug by Canelo. Alvarez’s camp once again claimed the positive test result stemmed from contaminated meat he consumed while training in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico. Stay tuned for a new date to be announced for this epic rematch. In all likelihood around MExican Independence weekend in September.
After the back and forth taunts between two of the greatest fighters for over a year now, what is now being called the greatest boxing match in boxing history between 40-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr, said to be one of the greatest boxers of his time and 28 year old Connor McGregor, the reigning UFC lightweight champion and former UFC heavyweight champion, is set to take place on 28th of August in T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.
After approval by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the fight date was announced at the MGM Grand. Mayweather took to his social media to announce the news by saying “it’s official “and hours later McGregor also posted a photo of Floyd Mayweather Sr and himself saying “The fight is on.”
The two fighters, though in different fields are the best at what they do. Connor McGregor although very young has a very impressive resume. He is the youngest person in UFC to simultaneously win two division belts consecutively after knocking out featherweight champion Jose Aldo in a title fight record of 13 seconds in 2015. He has been off since defeating Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight championship in November because of his newborn son.
Mayweather’s greatest victories include boxing against the best of the best boxers in the world like Oscar De La Hoya, Diego Corrales, Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao in 2015. He had retired in 2015 as the best pound-for-pound fighter in 2015 after defeating Andre Berto. With his supreme boxing skills and his great dodging tactics, Mayweather is said to be at an advantage in this boxing match. With this win, he will be ahead of former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano who also retired with a perfect 49-0 career record. On the other hand, McGregor is known for his highlight-reel knockouts and his ability to be quick on his feet. Though he is a mixed martial arts fighter and has never engaged in a boxing match before, he is confident about this win. Beating the biggest boxing star of this history, undefeated would put a turn in the boxing world and set a precedent like never before.
Mayweather is said to be fighting a larger, younger, faster and more energetic opponent who though not experienced in boxing, has a vast experience in combat sports and general fights. This is a match that people will be talking about until it happens and even years after it happens. It will redefine boxing as a whole as many have called it a true sporting spectacle. It is a once in a lifetime event. This is a definite must watch.

The name of the latest addition to the NHL has been announced, and it is Las Vegas who has introduced a team into the league in time for the 2017 to 2018 season. The Vegas’ Golden Knights, as they will be known, will base themselves in Las Vegas Valley, Nevada. This Las Vegas NHL expansion, team is a first for the sport and the area and will join the Pacific Division of the Western NHL Conference as far as it is well known.
Though the naming of the team may not seem like huge news, as Las Vegas was confirmed to enter the league five months ago. For fans, this is a big step towards how their team will be perceived within the sport.
A ceremony on Tuesday stopped the speculation by confirming the team’s name. This occasion, attended by hundreds of fans, also revealed the team’s new logo. Though at this early stage it is impossible to predict how the team might fare, the confirmation of the team name has made something of the years of speculation.
Bill Foley announced the news, stating that he wanted a “logo and the name which was known to be powerful, would epitomize t warrior class. However, the knights are always the epitome of a warrior class, the high of the line in terms of the defending realm, defending unprotected. Therefore this is all part of the cultures we need to create with hockey team.” This idea embodies his vision for the team, which will take them to prominence within the competition.
Historically, Las Vegas has hosted NHL games since 1991 but never participated in the league. NHL awards ceremonies were held in Vegas, but officials did not hint that it was a potential venue for expansion. Speculation was rife around 2009 about relocating the Phoenix Coyotes to Nevada, but it amounted to nothing. The Las Vegas Golden Knights are the first major league team to come out of Nevada.
The development of a Las Vegas team has been rumored since 2014. Bill Daly, deputy commissioner of the NHL, continuously denied the speculation about a Las Vegas NHL expansion team at these early stages. The addition of this team is the first expansion of the league since the addition of the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Minnesota Wild in 2000.
The terms of the expansion draft were set out in June 2016, after Las Vegas was confirmed to have won the bid. Quebec, the main rival, was deferred for an indefinite period of time. For Las Vegas, this is a big deal: the Vegas’ Golden Knights are the first professional sports franchise of major standing to be based in Sin City.
The team’s jerseys and merchandise will be produced by Adidas and will be available now to fans, so they can stock up before the start of the fall 2017 season. The Vegas’ Golden Knights at the present have the identity and a place in the NHL, an exciting development on their pathway to the league in 2017 as this is most important event ever known.
