Raiders Last Homegame in Oakland

On Sunday, Dec. 15, the Oakland Raiders played their last home game of the regular season against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Raiders lost to the Jaguars, with the final score of 20-16. Not only did this mark the last Raiders home game, but also the final game played at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Next season, the football team will be making a transition and relocate to their new home in the city of Las Vegas. The stadium is expected to be completed by July 31.

The Raiders have reportedly attempted to update the previous stadium since 1980 but ultimately were unsuccessful, and team owner Mark Davis is ready to get the team officially apart of the Vegas community. In a press release issued by the NFL, Davis commented, “We need a home. We need a stadium. That’s what Las Vegas is going to provide us, and it’s going to be a great marriage.” Even though the team will be in a new city, the team will not forget its roots in Oakland. Davis stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, “We were born in Oakland, and Oakland will always be apart of our DNA, but there were some great years in Los Angeles that will also be part of our DNA, and we’ll never forget that.”

This will be the third city relocation for the franchise. In the early 80’s former team owner Al Davis, signed an agreement with the city of Los Angeles to bring the Raiders to Los Angeles. As a part of the deal, the team also shared the Los Angeles Coliseum with the University of Southern California, before returning back to Oakland in 1994. While located in southern California, the Raiders won Super Bowl XVIII in 1984 against the Washington Redskins.

The move for the Raiders from the Bay Area to Sin City was announced in March of 2017. Residents of Las Vegas would soon be able to join in on the excitement of having an NFL team. The new Allegiant Stadium was expected to cost roughly $2 billion and will feature a natural grass field, translucent roof and sliding doors revealing a view of the Las Vegas Strip. The Raiders will also be sharing the new stadium with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s football team.
