Tight-lipped as ever Top Rank chairman and longtime Pacquiao promotor, Bob Arum is not giving up any details about the up and coming 2015 fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. A report in the New York Times online addition remarked that progress has been made between the camps and fight fans will be seeing the two boxers at the MGM Grand Garden sometime this year. An agreement to the prefight drug testing protocol has been met and they are nearing agreement on how to distribute the $200 million purse.
For now no one is confirming but a source with knowledge of the deal has made it clear these details are correct. As for the date well Mayweather usually has MGM reserved for the Cinco De Mayo weekend but reports have Canelo Alvarez wanting to fight in Vegas that weekend and Golden Boy Promotions president, Oscar De La Hoya has said he will do whatever it takes to get Alvarez the fight on the May 2 date. So the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout could take place later in May or even on into June. As of now there is nothing to stop this fight now except for the details. Details such as will the Pay Per View be HBO or Showtime or both as there is precedent for a joint venture. Both boxers usually fight for HBO, however Mayweather has two bouts on a six-fight deal left with Showtime. This fight has been in the making now for quite some time with both camps goading the other sending barbs back and forth mostly over social media, but those remarks have stopped this week so is this a telling sign? Could this be the sign we have all been waiting for? Keep your eyes and ears open for more details and dates as this epic battle unfolds.
