Vicente Fernandez is known as the Ranchera Music's Reigning King (El rey de la cancion ranchera). Born during February of 1940 in Jalisco, Mexico, he launched his career as a street performer, singing for tips. When he was 26 years old, he was offered a record deal with Sony Discos (formerly CBS Mexico).

His musical genres are mariachi and ranchera. Many believe his music and style epitomize pure ranchera, which is considered Mexico's traditional music. Ranchera was originally performed by one singer playing a guitar. It dates back to the Mexican Revolution, and gained mainstream popularity during the 1930s. This music romanticizes Old Mexico, including ranches, philandering Mexican gentlemen, and the Revolution.

In addition to a singing career, this cultural icon is an actor. He's released more than 50 albums, and performed in 31 movies. Throughout his career, he has sold more than 65 million albums to fans around the globe.

This prolific performer has won numerous awards, including five Regional Mexican Male Artist of the Year awards from Univision and Billboard. In 1994, he was nominated for a Grammy award for the best Mexican-American album. His 2009 album, "Necesito de Ti" (I Need You) won a Grammy for the Best Regional Mexican album. He has 51 albums listed on the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) registry, including multi-platinum, platinum and gold.

This iconic performer has received many honors. In 2002, the Latin Recording Academy named him its Person of the Year. During the presentation ceremony for his star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in California in 1998, a record-number of fans were in attendance, totaling more than 5,000. In Guadalajara, an arena has been named in his honor.
