The Country rock, Red Dirt band Turnpike Troubadours consist of members: Front-man and guitarist, Evan Felker, bassist R.C. Edwards, fiddler Kyle Nix, guitarist Ryan Engelman, and drummer Gabe Pearson. They have released only three studio albums since 2007. Bossier City and Goodbye Normal Street were released on Bossier Records, the second album Diamonds & Gasoline was released on Onward Music. Only their third album, Goodbye Normal Street, made it onto the charts in the U.S. and actually hit the chart in three different music genres they were, Country music charts at 14, Folk at #3, Indie at #7 and the Rock chart at #23. This band’s sound is deep rooted in southern red dirt rock which is a genre of music that gets its name from the color of soil found in Oklahoma with Stillwater, OK, being the epicenter of Red Dirt Music. The late Oklahoma singer-songwriter, Bob Childers is noted at being the Father of Oklahoma Red Dirt Music. The two sounds used to be recognizably different until 2008 when that gap diminished. This genre can be best likened to the genre of indie rock as there is no definitive sound that can be attributed to all the bands in the movement. Best described as a beautiful mix of folk, country, rock, bluegrass, blues, western swing, cajun and honkytonk. Some have defined it as “country music with attitude” that celebrates and explores modern rural life with a full knowledge of history without any of the stereotypical ornate revivalist.
