Portugal. The Man (yes, there's a period in the middle of their name) is an American rock band based in Portland, Oregon, but originally from Wasilla, Alaska.  If you give the band credit for anything, it's got to be at least for the uniqueness of their name.  Co-founder and creator of all the art work for every album cover, John Gourley, once explained it as an attempt to create a demi-mythic entity bigger than the individual band members...  Um, ok.

Currently consisting of John Gourley, Jason Sechrist, Ryan Neighbors, and Zachary Carothers, Portugal. The Man was formed after the group Anatomy of a Ghost (of which John and Zach were members) broke up.  The band then left Alaska and went ot Portland with the intent of recording and touring.  THe band recorded demos in the summer of 2004 and followed this with a tour in the fall.

Portugal. The Man's debut record Waiter: "You Vultures!" was released by Fearless Records in January 2006.
