Paul Simon is a singer-songwriter and guitarist.  Simon's musical succes began in 1965 when Paul was one half of the duo Simon & Garfunkel, with musical partner Art Garfunkel.  Simon wrote most of the pair's songs, including three that reached number one on the US singles charts.  The duo split in 1970, at the height of their popularity, and Simon began a successful solo career, recording three highly-acclaimed albums over the next five years.

Simon changed his sound in the 1980s, and his African-influenced album Graceland (1986) was a popular and critical success that kept him on the charts.  This album was recorded with African musicians and became the most successful and influential of the new genre of World Music.  Even with all of his artistic and commercial growth, Simon still has a high level of insecurity that keeps him on edge.  "He's particularly vulnerable when he's writing," noted Simon's friend Lorne Michaels, best known as producer of the TV program Saturday Night Live.  "Sometimes he'll play you a song and you'll go, 'That's great!' and he seems genuinely surprised you like it.  He's pretty rough on himself."

Through his solo and collaborative work, Simon has earned 13 Grammys, including the Lifetime Achievement Award.  In 2001, Paul Simon was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2007, Simon was named the first recipient of the Library of Congress's Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.
