Neil Diamond is an American singer-songwriter with a career spanning over five decades from the 1960s until today.  Some of his hit songs include "Kentucky Woman" (1967), "Sweet Caroline" (1969), "Song Sung Blue" (1972), and "Love on the Rocks" (1980).  A hired-gun songwriter in the early 1960s, he wrote the Monkees' 1967 hit "I'm a Believer" around the time he began his own recording career.  On the strength of a string of hits, Diamond became one of the best selling performers of the 1970s.  His devoted fan base carried him through the 1980 and in the 90s he was rediscovered by a new generation of retro-loving pop fans.

Diamond himself had admitted in People magazine that he had struggled with doubts about his songs.  "After years of working with a psychiatrist I have finally forgiven myself for not being Beethoven."  Diamond may not be Beethoven, but the emotions he stirs among his millions of fans cannot be minimized.  "My music says what I am," Diamond told the New York Post.  "It speaks about what I feel as a person, what I dream about, what i hope to be."

As of 2001, Diamond had sold over 115 million records worldwide including 48 million in the US alone.  He is considered to be the third most successful adult contemporary artist ever on the Billboard charts behind Barbra Streisand and Elton John.  Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984 and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
