Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, better known by his stage name Lupe Fiasco, is an American rapper, artist, record producer, and entrepreneur.  Lupe rose to fame in 2006 following the success of his critically acclaimed debut album, Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor.  He also performs as the frontman of post punk band Japanese Cartoon under his real name.

Fiasco initially disliked hip-hop music fir its use of vulgarity and profanity so he preferred to listen to jazz; Lupe idolized clarinet player Benny Goodman.  He began rapping when he was in the eighth grade and upon listening to Nas' 1996 album, It Was Written, Fiasco started to get into hip-hop.

The highly conceptualized follow-up to his debut album, The Cool, was released in December 2007. Despite four additional Grammy nominations and gold sales certification, Fiasco met a number of obstacles on the way to the release of his third album, Lasers. The process culminated in a petition signed by over 30,000 followers who demanded that Atlantic release the long-delayed album, which was followed by a fan protest outside the label's New York City offices. Lasers was finally issued by Atlantic in March 2011.
