SAFETY PROTOCOLS

An all-male, modern hip hop dance crew with white masks and gloves, Jabbawockeez has been named one of the best new dance groups the hit the floor recently. They conceal themselves using masks and gloves to let the audience pay more attention to the performance. With a huge mix of many cultures and demographics represented here, this is one of the most promising young dance groups around. With each performance, they get better and better, and their Jabbawockeez Las Vegas show is no exception.

How the Jabbawockeez Make Their Shows

Jabbawockeez typically work with mixers to compose their own songs and have unique "Jabba-style" dances. For example, one song they have begins with applause and an African American male preacher speaking. The troupe members clap, while one pretends to act as a mic and the other acts as though he is giving a speech. Then, the troupe dances to a locked violin beat with incredible moves, their fingers fluttering. Bass beats in a hip hop rhythm come in and the leader does some incredible break dancing.

Masters of Magic and Illusion as Well as Dance

The whole theme for this dance troupe is that they can focus solely on the performance -- they are true magicians and masters of illusion. Jabbawockeez wear their gloves and masks to help the audience focus completely on what is happening performance wise. They actually create the illusion of levitation by having three of them on the ground on their knees with the upper half of a body and lower half sticking out on each side just one foot from the ground. They are, in essence, very much like a "Street version" of Cirque du Soileil.

Winners of America’s Best Dance Crew

The troupe also won for the first season of America's Best Dance Crew. They started out with several different members of various cultures including Vietnamese, Chinese, African American, and Hispanic. They usually collectively do their performances, music, and design.

The Jabbawockeez First Show and History

The Jabbawockeez Las Vegas first show was MUS.I.C. at the MGM Grand Hollywood Theater in 2010. The Bangerz was the DJ group that started their first choreography and music. They are now making music through album releases and crowd performances in Las Vegas. Now they repeatedly dance at the MGM theater, and so you can grab tickets to see this fantastic troupe of dancers at that location.

With its incredible mix of intricate dance moves, music, and special effects, the Jabbawockeez are considered one of the most influential new groups of their time and have been voted as a "Best Family Show" for more than 3 years.

Numerous Different Modern Hip Hop Dance Styles and Influences

The great thing about Jabbawockeez is how they have incorporated a number of different styles into their choreography. They have made hip hop dance styles part of their show. While hip hop started on street corners in urban areas, street dancers began to get noticed by people who saw their capabilities. This dance style came from those who love to move to good beats. The acrobatic aspects of hiphop dancing have made breakdancing a very important part of modern dance -- especially for the Jabbawockeez. You can also see other style of moves in their shows, such as freestyle, where they improvise and use the melody and rhythm in the dance to alter the way they move, to shape their routine.

They also use locking, where the dancers lock into positions and then move on instead of just using regular flowing motions from their different steps. It began as a standard form of dance in the 1960s in California, and became the standard for robotic dancing.

Popping is another hip hop dance form, which uses quick and jerky movements with a fast contraction of muscles that are done with the neck, arms, legs, or combined areas of the body. And finally the troupe also uses break dancing, which is very demanding and is usually only done by advanced Jabbawockeez members. You can see incredible stunts here, using strength and grace that seem superhuman.

How Hip Hop Dance History Plays into Jabbawockeez Choreography

Hip hop dance history is actually quite interesting and you can see the whole evolution of it in Jabbawockeez shows. It started out in the 70s and 80s with break dancing, which was appearing in the Bronx in New York -- that was originally used to settle differences between gangs in a way that didn't use violence. This was a great way for people to stay alive, especially for young members of gangs. Then headspinning and backspins, waves, and windmills all began to be popularized in the late 70s with the Rock Steady Crew. Another important DJ named Afrika Bambatta helped to get breakdancing to become well known among the masses. This also had a big impact on youth, who took off with the art form and started dance troupes like the Jabbawockeez.
