American pop singer Tony Orlando was born on Apr. 3, 1944 as Michael Anthony Orlando Cassavitis. He gained fame as the singer of the 1970s group with Dawn. Record producer Don Kirshner discovered him after he reached the charts in 1961 as a 16-year-old with the songs "Bless You" and "Halfway to Paradise". As well as being a singer, he also became a record producer for CBS Records.

He made it big in the 1970s while recording with a band named Dawn. However, when their songs became major hits, the band's name was changed to Tony Orlando and Dawn. The group had several huge chart successes with songs such as "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree", "Knock Three Times", and "Candida".

The band also had its own television variety show between 1974 and 76 named on CBS. The group disbanded in 1978, but the charismatic lead singer carried on with a solo career.

The singer grew up in the Manhattan and Hell's Kitchen areas of New York City before moving with his family to New Jersey's Hasbrouck Heights. He launched his career with a doo-wop group named The Five Gents and in 1969 joined a band named Wind, which had a top-30 hit with a song named "Make Believe".

He recorded "Candida" with backup singers Linda November and Toni Wine and the song became a hit. They followed it up with "Knock Three Times" and then asked singers Joyce Vincent Wilson and Telma Hopkins to join the band and tour with them as regular members.

He retired from performing in 1977, but was back on the stage in the 1980s as a solo artist who regularly sold out shows in Las Vegas. Tony Orlando opened a theater in Branson, Missouri in 1993, which has since closed, but he continues to play to sold-out crowds across America.
