The Cult is a British rock band which formed in 1983 that currently consists of Ian Astbury, Billy Duffy, Chris Wyse, and John Tempesta.  Following a succession of name and stylistic changes, they gained a dedicated following in Britain in the mid-1980s as a post-punk band with singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary", before breaking mainstream in the United States in the late 1980s as a hard rock band with singles such as "Love Removal Machine" and "Fire Woman".

Picking up the pseudo-mysticism and Native American obsessions of the Doors, the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin, and the three-chord crunch of AC/DC, while adding touches of post-punk goth rock, the Cult's success was marred from difficulties with off-stage tensions and problems which prevented them from really retaining their popularity.

Even though the group split in 1995 following a pair of unsuccessful records, they would return together on an occasional basis for new records -- always anchored by vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy.
