The excitement builds as the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas take place. As the events progress from one to the next, find yourself participating in the enthusiasm of gathered fans and crowds, cheering for your favorite rider.

The competition is one that many riders from all over the country dream of. It takes many years of practice, along with the use of calves, steers and bulls from breeding farms. These farms specifically work with blood lines that have distinct value, combining them to create the ultimate in calves, cows, and bulls.

Every rider must train diligently, and then turn their training efforts to their steeds. The barrel racers have to train their horses for speed, agility and endurance. Proper feeding and selective breeding of fine animals is one of the best ways to keep the mares and stallions running at their top performance. Quarter horses and showman horses are found all over the arena, specifically trained for their show-stopping performances.

Calf roping is another competition that can be found at the exciting events. Along with this is bronc riding. Riders are especially trained and aware of dangers should they be thrown from their horse. However, this is where the clowns come in.

These great performers run around, trained to entertain the crowd, but also trained to help calm an animal. The purpose of barrels placed in the arena during any ride, short of the barrel races, is for the clowns to jump in for protection. This is just in case the animal becomes excessively irate. A clown's first and foremost job is to protect themselves and the rider, then entertain the audience.

As each event unfolds, points are scored by the rider and by the animal. The level of difficulty is a factor in the scoring. Barrel racers are scored on time, how many barrels they knock over, and the agility of rider and horse together. Speed is the most dominant part of the score, followed by the other levels.

Finally, the anticipation opens up to the ultimate rodeo event: bull riding. Bull riders have trained and educated themselves for many years to be the best of the best. Earning the buckles, wearing the chaps, dirt, dust and mud are only part of the rider's life. Many of them spend their lives working on riding as a career, traveling all over the country to be announced in the final event of the season. During the ride for the required eight seconds, bull riders hold on for dear life. The bull bucks, spins, jolts, and sends the rider flying through the air. With one hand above their head and the other clutching the handle, the bull rider is indeed in the most danger that he could be in throughout his life.

The National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas is one of the most exciting events in the rodeo world. It is now broadcast over cable networks where viewers can see their favorite hometown heroes and heroines battle it out for the ultimate prize: National Champion.
