For two hours every Friday and Saturday Jay Leno returns to the stage because he is no only one of the hardest working performers of this and the last generation, but he also has a need to make people laughing. Spending an hour five nights a week is just not enough. Sure he has a captivated audience at his NBC studio, but he began his professional life as a standup comedian and yearns to sell Jay Leno tickets so he can deliver his own set without the intervention of a television executive vetting his jokes for possibly offensive material.

That is not to suggest Jay is performer whose heart and inclination is challenge censors and the bounds of common decency. No, he is an observational comic at heart, one who rose to fame in the Golden Age of comedy in the 1980s. His monthly weekend performances as part of the rotating lineup at the Aces of Comedy at the Mirage take the audience back to those days. Sure there may be a few dirty jokes, but it is a return to comedy before the alternative label and the absurdist direction. Thus, maintaining his brand of humor as one that everyone can relate and enjoy.

Expect much of the latest developments in Los Angeles to seep into his performance. NBC has cut the payroll for the Tonight Show staff and Leno has had to let go nearly two dozen of his staff. Deeply affected, he chose to take a pretty dramatic pay cut to save any more of his staff from joining the ranks of the struggling and unemployed.

The Terry Fator Theatre will not be his soap box to vocalize his discontent, just get ready for a few jokes about the upcoming lineup and a network fallen from the graces of “Must See” television. Jay Leno Las Vegas is going to be an hour and half of farcical banter adding a bit of levity without commercial breaks. An opening act will take the stage and warm up the crowd for a half an hour (believe me; these comedians are happy to have the opportunity to try out their comedy special material).
