When a group of three full-time producers and part-time musicians decided to find a singer and make a record, the name Garbage had, unbelievably, not yet been used by another band.  The singer which the trio hired was a Scottish woman with the equally unlikely name of Shirley, and their 1995 debut sold a million copies in its first year (eventually selling over 4 million units), earning the band a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.  Garbage released a string of increasing successful singles in 1995-96, including "Stupid Girl" and "Only Happy When It Rains".

After quietly disbanding in late 2003, Garbage regrouped to complete a fourth album in 2005 and began to tour.  They ended up cutting their tour short and announced an indefinite hiatus which would ultimately only last until 2007 when they would release the greatest hits retrospective Absolute Garbage.  The band began working on their fifth album in October 2010 titled Not Your Kind of People, which was released in 2012.
