Born Edward Louis Severson III, Eddie Vedder is an American musician and singer-songwriter who is best known for being the lead singer and one of three guitarists of the legendary alternative rock band Pearl Jam.
Widely considered an icon of alternative rock, along with Kurt Cobain, he reluctantly became a celebrity and alt-rock spokesman when his band hit the big time in the early 90s. Originally called Mookie Blaylock, Pearl Jam released their debut album, Ten, in the fall of 1991. With the Seattle scene (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, et al.) exploding on the charts, airwaves, and media, Pearl Jam picked the perfect time to issues their debut. Eventually outselling all other Seattle bands, Pearl Jam became one of the biggest groups of the 90s.
Vedder is also involved in soundtrack work and contributes to albums by other artists. In 2007, he released his first solo album as a soundtrack for the film Into the Wild (2007). His second album, Ukulele Songs, along with a live DVD was released in May 2011.
