Cirque du Soleil O in Las Vegas has been in residence at the Bellagio Resort and Casino since October of 1998. O is pronounced eau, and is the French word for water. This water-based production takes place inside, beside and above a 1.5 million-gallon pool. It features a variety of engaging ground, aerial, and water acts, including synchronized swimming.
Owned by MGM Resorts International, the Bellagio is conveniently located on The Strip. Its design was inspired by Bellagio, Italy, especially the resort region of Lake Como. In addition to the resident O show, the complex's other signature attractions include a conservatory, the Fountains of Bellagio, Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art, and Bank Nightclub. It has an enormous casino which covers an area of 116,000 square feet.
One of the Bellagio's most notable features is an eight-acre lake which separates it from The Strip. It was designed to represent Lake Como. This is where the Fountains of Bellagio are situated. During the day, there are periods when these large water fountains are programmed to perform dramatic, synchronized movements amid a background of music.
O features an international cast of 85 divers, synchronized swimmers, and acrobats. Each member of the cast is certified for SCUBA diving. The performance pool is kept at a constant 88 degrees Fahrenheit. It contains a state-of-the-art underwater communications system, and regulators which allow the swimmers to breathe underwater.
Since many performers spend time in the water, they have multiple sets of identical costumes. This allows them to change quickly and re-appear dry, even though they just came out of the pool. Some props have multiple functions. For example, the umbrella is also used as a boat.
Cirque du Soleil O in Las Vegas is a fascinating, innovative production suitable to audience members of all ages. Performances are generally held twice nightly, Wednesdays through Sundays. The performance venue is the amazing custom-made O theater at the Bellagio.
