Alice in Chains is an American rock band that formed in Seattle, WA in 1987 by Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley. The group rose to international fame in the early 1990’s as part of the grunge movement with other great Seattle bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Alice in Chains turned out to be one of the most successful music acts of the 1990’s by selling over 17 million albums worldwide. Although the band never officially broke up, there was an extended inactivity after 1996 due to substance abuse, culminating in the death of Layne Staley in April 2002. In 2005, Jerry Cantrell joined up with Mike Inez and Sean Kinney to perform a benefit concert
in Seattle for the tsunami disaster victims in South Asia. Afterwards, they began a small tour and writing new material with Comes with the Fall vocalist, William DuVall, on lead vocals. Alice in Chains released their first new album in 14 years titled Black Gives Way to Blue in September 2009.
