Al Green was the first great soul singer of the '70s and arguably the last great Southern soul singer. With his seductive and illustrious voice on top of the lively grooves of the Willie Mitchell-led Hi Records house band, was the very definition of both Memphis soul and early-1970s R&B. Green was a virtual hit machine for the first half of that decade, but after a personal revelation he turned to gospel music, bought his own church, and became a practicing minister. Nevertheless, the spiritual recordings he subsequently released find him no less riveting a presence.

After spending several years exclusively performing gospel, Green began to return to R&B. First, he released a duet with Annie Lennox, "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" for Scrooged, a Bill Murray film. His 1994 duet with country music singer Lyle Lovett blended country with R&B, garnering him his ninth Grammy, this time in a pop music category. Green's first secular album in some time was Your Heart's In Good Hands (1995), released to positive reviews but disappointing sales, the same year Green was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 2000, Green published Take Me to the River, a book discussing his career. The Grammys presented Green with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.

Green released in 2003 a secular album entitled I Can't Stop, his first collaboration with Willie Mitchell since 1985's He is the Light. The next year, Green was inducted into the Gospel Music Association's Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
