Brian Wilson is an American musician best known as the chief songwriter for the Beach Boys. Besides being their primary composer, he also functioned as the group's main producer and arranger. After signing with Capitol Records in mid-1962, Wilson wrote or co-wrote more than two dozen Top 40 hits for the Beach Boys. He is arguably one of the greatest American composers of popular music in the rock era. After 5 years of writing and producing for the Beach Boys, he yielded most of his control to his younger brother Carl. Brian made sporadic contributions to their records, returning only briefly as a songwriter and producer in the mid-70s.

Following a long period of drug addiction, mental illness, and general isolation, Wilson issued his first solo album in 1988. Despite the promising lead single "Love and Mercy," commercial success proved elusive; ironically, the Beach Boys had recorded their own comeback record around the same time and wound up topping the charts with "Kokomo." Wilson attempted to find his footing with a second solo album, Sweet Insanity, which was rejected outright by Sire and permanently shelved.

More recently, Wilson's website announced that he is recording and self-producing new material with guitarist Jeff Beck, session musician/producer Don Was, as well as fellow Beach Boys Al Jardine and David Marks. The website later announced that the material might be split into three albums; one of new pop songs, another of mostly instrumental tracks with Beck, and another of interwoven tracks dubbed "the suite". Wilson embarked on a short summer tour which included Jardine and Marks. It was then announced in August that Wilson would embark on a fall 2013 tour with Jeff Beck. According to Beck, "Brian will kick things off, but I'll also be given enough time to establish what I'm about. In the end, we'll mix and match. It's a complete honor to be on stage with him."
