Stevie Wonder was born in Michigan, in 1950. Although blind by birth, this did not deter him from following his dreams. His mother Lula Mae Hardaway, a songwriter, divorced his father when he was only 4 and moved to Detroit with her six children. At an early age, Wonder started showing his interest in music and began playing instruments like the harmonica, piano, and drums. He also sang in a choir at the Whitestone Baptist Church, Detroit.
Wonder partnered with a friend named John and together they performed on street corners and sometimes at parties. His fate took a turn when he appeared for an audition at Motown and CEO Berry Gordy was quick to identify the gem. He was quickly signed for a five-year contract and the producer Clarence Paul gave him a nickname Little Stevie Wonder’. The royalties were held in a trust until Wonder turned 21. Until then, he and his mother were paid a weekly stipend to cover their expenses.
Wonder’s classic period is agreed to be between 1970 and 1979. The 1970s albums had a far-reaching influence on the music industry. The 1971 release Where I’m Coming From’ heralded the beginning of a classic period with funky new keyboard style and innovative stylistic approaches that helped to shape the pop music for the next decade.
The 1980s is believed to be Wonder’s commercial period when he achieved the peak of his career with the biggest hits and highest sales of albums. He was also involved in high-profile collaborations, charity participation, television appearances, and political impact.
